The defining moment for Bob Miller’s career in architecture came at a young age. While attending a parochial school in Eastern Iowa one of his teachers asked him “What do you want to be when you grow up?” At the tender ago of 8 he had narrowed his choices to two reasonable and responsible answers: a race car driver or an architect. Since you’re not reading this on the NASCAR website, obviously architecture won. The project was an extreme makeover with the biggest challenge being Mother Nature!

While it may not be overtly obvious the two careers have many similarities: both are highly competitive, mentally demanding, and require talent and perseverance to complete the race (or in this case the project) well.

Since 1970, when Miller graduated from the University of Florida School of Architecture with honors, he has worked diligently to design inspirational buildings. Licensed by the age of 29, Miller was employed for the first 9 years of his career for a national architecture and engineering firm in Eastern Iowa where he won numerous design awards. In 1981, Miller and his family moved to Florida where he accepted a position with a premier Central Florida firm where he worked for 8 years as the Vice President of Design.

Realizing his own version of the Great American Dream, in 1989 Miller founded R. Miller Architecture, Inc. and opened his office as the only employee. The shift from a one-man office to a team of talented architects, interior designers and landscape architects occurred over a period of time with the increase in demand for services. For nearly 20 years our firm has been inspired by hundreds of clients who have entrusted their projects to us. The talented group of men and women at R. Miller Architecture, Inc. are committed to excellence and share Miller’s passion for architecture.

In 2006 Miller was honored by the American Institute of Architects with the investment into the College of Fellows. Fellowship is the highest honor an architect in the AIA can receive. In fact, of the 90,000 architects nationwide, only 3% are honored with the title AIA Fellow.

On June 8, 2006 at the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows investment ceremony a jury of national architects said this about Bob, “Offering not just his services, but his heart, Bob Miller has worked tirelessly for the well being of others. His exemplary life exudes compassion and excellence and his colleagues and profession with the most extraordinary expressions of ingenious forethought, compassion and excellence.” The service was held at the magnificent Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles designed by Frank Gehry, FAIA.

What’s around the next bend for R. Miller Architecture, Inc.? We’re driving towards creating more inspirational spaces, sustainable projects, and exceeding our client’s expectations.
