American Baptist Churches Are Full Of Good News!

American Baptist Churches are full of Good News! Sometimes it may be hard to see and hear it but God is always working in our denomination whether all us are aware of it or not. In an effort to share the wonderful works of Christ in our lives, ABCUSA will be highlighting the good news of local churches and spreading their joy to the rest of our Baptist brothers and sisters. The story of the New Covenant Baptist Church is an excellent example of God moving and acting through His earthly agents to further His Kingdom.

Rev. Dr. Randolph Bracy had been the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Paschall in Philadelphia for almost ten years when God’s newest call came. Hi wife, Dr. Lavon Wright Bracy, had spent the same amount of time as the assistant managing director for the Office of Homelessness with the City of Philadelphia and both had risen to their duties with skill and devotion. God’s plan for them, however, took them back to their native Florida where a different need existed – a need they were capable and willing to meet.

After moving to Orlando and following much prayer and introspection, the Bracys began forming a body of believers that would lead to the founding of a new church family. As a result, thanks to their devotion to evangelism and their knowledge that God was their refuge and strength, when the New Covenant Baptist Church met officially for the first time at the Winter Park Civic Center, over 400 souls were in attendance!

Commenting on a recent trip to New Covenant, Dr. Leo Thorne, Associate General Secretary of Mission Resource Development, ABCUSA, said “I visited with Dr. Bracy and his wife, Lavon, a few weeks ago and was impressed with their vision, the organization, and the church music program. We are proud to have them and their congregation as a member of our ABC family.”

Only four years after inception, the church purchased 23 lakefront acres and built the first phase of their Master Plan Project: Miracle on Rio Grande, a 3 story, 30,000 s.f. facility became home to the New Covenant Baptist Church and its ministry programs in 1996. Phase two of the Master Plan Project is set to open this June, the Covenant by the Lakes Senior Apartments is a 122 unit senior citizen apartment complex located next to the church.

Besides its worship program New Covenant offers Christian Education, Evangelism Ministry, Outreach and Prison Ministry and Youth Ministry. It also operates the Community Development Corporation which sponsors local housing initiatives, community revitalization, and economic development.

Speaking on the continuing rise in opportunity for ministry with New Covenant, Rev. Bracy said, “We began this ministry fourteen years ago in the trunk of a car; we moved to a tent, then to a tabernacle. We are on our way to a temple. We are thankful for the favor of God in our lives. Whatever we have received, it is of the Lord. If there is any boasting, it is in God.”

“Recently my family and some friends were in Orlando and on vacation.”said Dr. Aidsand Wright-Riggins, executive director of National Ministries. “We did all the usual tourist kinds of things, including going to Disney World to visit the Magic Kingdom. On Sunday morning, we worshipped at New Covenant. We discovered that the Magic Kingdom at Disney World cannot compare to the expression of the Master’s Kingdom that we witnessed there. Dr. Randolph and Dr. Lavon Bracy are creative, caring and committed people who have developed a truly missional church in Orlando.”

God’s blessing of the ministry of New Covenant is evident in the lives they touch and the souls they win for Christ. As the church continues to expand, the opportunities for ministry will grow as well making their corner of Orlando a spiritual oasis for Christians.
