Sanford Housing Authority
The Sanford Housing Authority located in downtown Sanford consists of 475 dwelling units in 6 unique developments. The Sanford Housing Authority retained R. Miller Architecture, Inc. to implement their Master Redevelopment Plan goals to redevelop and revitalize this community. The design and approach for redevelopment required several critical considerations which were outlined in the SHA Plan:
- There is a growing need for dedicated housing for elderly and disabled residents in the neighborhood. The Plan includes a mid-rise building dedicated for occupancy by the elderly and disabled that includes associated services.
- As the Baby Boomer populations ages, there is a tremendous need for affordable Assisted Living Facilities that help to bridge the continuum of care from independent living to a nursing home.
- In order to stabilize the neighborhood, it is critical to increase the number of owner-occupied units in the neighborhood.
- To promote city-wide community development, there is a need to “connect” the initiatives related to downtown redevelopment with the growth of the I-4/Mall area. The Master Plan includes a provision for the redevelopment of property fronting SR 46 into retail and professional space in order to create a streetscape along SR46.
- To promote revitalization in the neighborhood as a whole, there is a need to reduce the degree of isolation of the current properties. As a result, the Master plan includes a proposed widening of two streets to create “gateways” into various components of the Plan.
R. Miller Architecture, Inc. is pleased to be working for the Sanford Housing Authority to help revitalize and redevelop this important housing core of the Sanford Community.
